On one of his “exploration” trips, Simon van der Stel, spent the night of 8 November 1679 on a small “Island” in the Eerste River (First River). This date was therefore the beginning of the well-known Stellenbosch. As early as 1680 a number of farmers established farms in the “Colony” of Stellenbosch.

In 1685 the core of Stellenbosch was formed

In 1685 the core of Stellenbosch was formed by the Drostdy and the Church. Erven were “sold” to the people of the town Stellenbosch and the first residential properties of Stellenbosch were built on the corner of Ryneveld and Church Streets. The oldest residential property, Schreuder House, is still situated on this corner.

Gracious residential properties in old Cape Dutch architectural design, were build during 1710 all along Dorp Street, which remains one of the streets with the best conserved historical buildings in Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch University

The well known Stellenbosch University, affectionately called “Maties”, is part of this unique town and keeps the “heart” of Stellenbosch young! The Coetzenburgh Sports Complex is an international training centre for athletes all over the world.

The Stellenbosch Information Bureau provides excellent information regarding the history of Stellenbosch and the Winelands with its renowned wine estates and cullinary art.
